The quest for equality and women empowerment is taking a different turn as women leaders task Nigerian women to establish relevance in their spheres of activity and all sectors of the economy.

At activities to mark women’s history month in Abuja, some women leaders, including the Missouri secretary of state, Robin Carnahan said no country can afford to ignore up to 50 percent of its resourceful population on whom economic progress depends.

Ms. Carnahan said Nigeria still ranks 125th out of 198 countries who give relevance to women in national economy despite the realization that they make up a good percentage of the informal sector which sustains the economy.

She also expressed optimism that Nigeria will come to witness changes and will claim its place in Africa and the world at large “We have seen overtime in the last generation real changes in the United States, but it took a generation. We will see those changes in Nigeria but I think it will spread up because younger people are more impatient, they are going to be able to use technology because of communicating and understanding what is going on in the world”

Other Nigerian women leaders said ensuring they are indispensable, regaining their confidence and offering mentorship to younger generations are sure ways to gain the empowerment and equality that women have been fighting for.

Chief executive officer of Syntel-Aza, Deborah Ogazuma said “Women have been playing a vital role in the country’s economy and they need to be recognized. You say you are a great country and you want to be a great nation, your greatness is because you have this great man and woman, but if you decide to overlook the woman, you are not going to get that greatness because you are not using all the skill, knowhow and creativity that you need to be able to get that greatness”

Yemisi Osundinakin of Equity Advocates also said that the females remain handicapped only in stature but not are equal to their male counter parts in other aspects. She quipped that “the weakness of a woman is not in her functionality but in her design, the woman in terms of physical appearance is more delicate than the man but that does not translate to intellectual inferiority”
