The governor of Niger state, Babangida Aliyu has revealed that governors supported the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government because a few Nigerians were exploiting the process at the expenses of majority of Nigerians living in poverty.

Dr Aliyu revealed this at the opening of a five day seminar on good governance and post fuel subsidy appraisal organised by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in collaboration with the office of the Secretary to the government of the federation in Minna, the capital of Niger state.

The governor alleged that the protests and street rallies that greeted the announcement of the removal of fuel subsidy was sponsored by the cabal in the petroleum sector who had been enjoying illegal proceeds from the subsidy.

The Director General, NOA, Mr Mike Omeri told the audience that no matter how laudable the programme of the government is, it cannot succeed if the people who are supposed to benefit from such programme are not well informed about it.

He therefore appealed to government at all levels to create avenues of explaining polices and programme to the people before they are implemented. This he explained will mitigate the negative attitude of the people towards government programmes.

He also used the opportunity of the event to read out some of the new initiative of the agency.

Omeri said his organisation is promoting interfaith dialogue as a way of bringing about religious peace and harmony in the country.

He also said NOA is promoting the adoption of the second stanza of the National Anthem as the official National Prayer.

Dr. Aliyu corroborated the claim of the NOA boss on communication gap between the governors and the governed, a situation he said should not be allowed to continue.

He appealed to the agency to come out with effective strategies to effectively communicate the policies of government to the people in the best language it will be understood.
