The House of Representatives on Tuesday summoned the Minister of Power, Barth Nnaji and the Chairman, Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sam Amadi over the planned increase in electricity tariff.

Both men are expected to appear before the House Committee on Power to explain the rationale behind the planned increase in the electricity tariff.

The committee is expected to submit its report within two weeks.

The decision to summon the power Minister and the NERC boss followed a motion moved by Yakub Balogun (ACN, Lagos) who citing Standing order 8; rule 46 on matter of urgent public importance drew the attention of his colleagues to the planned increase in electricity tariff.

According to Mr Balogun, the increase when implemented will bring untold hardship on consumers in Nigeria, in spite of the irregular power supply.

The NERC Chairman had last weekend at a meeting with electricity generation companies in Abuja said that the new electricity tariff would commence on June 1.

He said that the new “Multi-Year-Tariff-Order”, would not affect the low income earners and will attract more investors, because it will lead to increase in power generation.

The Speaker of the House, Aminu Tambuwal said that there was the need to invite the minister to brief the committee on power on why the increase in electricity tariff.
