The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Thursday donated blood to the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) in Abuja to commemorate the 2012 World Blood Donor Day.

The World Blood Donor day is dedicated to thanking and celebrating voluntary non-remunerated blood donors for saving millions of lives of needy patients.

The theme for the 2012 World Blood Donor Day is `Every blood donor is a hero’, focusing on the idea that whoever donates blood is a hero.

The minister also urged Nigerians to donate blood as it helps to save the lives of people.

“I call on Nigerians to donate blood today and save a life” he said

The WHO chose June 14 as the day to recognise the millions of people who save lives and improve the health of others by donating blood.

The day highlights the need to regularly give blood to prevent shortages in hospitals and clinics, particularly in developing countries where quantities of blood are very limited
