Borno elders ask Jonathan to remove soldiers from Maiduguri’s streets

The Borno Elders Forum on Thursday called on President Goodluck Jonathan to “drastically reduce the number of soldiers patrolling the streets of Maiduguri”, stressing that the military occupation has made the town “desolate and the people refugees in their own town.”

The elders further called on members of the Boko Haram, to consider the sufferings of the poor people and stop fighting.

In a speech by the Chairman of the forum, elder statesman and first minister of petroleum, Shettima Ali Monguno, read by former head of the Borno State Civil Service, Bulama Mali Gubio, the elders decried the protracted security challenges in the state which had crippled all social and economic activities to the extent that people found it difficult to perform their five obligatory prayers in congregation.

“Our people can no longer engage in any meaningful activity to sustain their lives. Nowadays, the people cannot perform the five obligatory prayers in congregation in mosques near their houses or perform the Friday prayers in several mosques in the town.

“We are no longer practicing our religion as desired. Our markets and other places of business are no more; many people can no longer access schools for their children. People can no longer move from one point to another without being subjected to harrowing experience,” Mr Shettima said.

He said the forum therefore recommends that: “The members of the Boko haram are our children, sons and brothers. We are aware of your grievances; we are however appealing to you to ponder on the recent happenings and how our people are subjected to those harrowing conditions enumerated above.

“We appeal to you to lay down your arms, come back home, re-integrate yourselves and help salvage our destroyed society and economy. Nobody else will do this for us except ourselves. You have the right to live your normal lives like other citizens and go about with your lawful activities as members of our community.

“All of you should as a matter of urgency come back, confide in us and seek the path of dialogue to resolve all issues you may wish to raise. You need to do that for Islam, for our people and for yourselves. This is your own land and you have no other land.”

These elders should first remove their soldiers boko haram before asking Federal Govt to withdraw troops

I have not heard or read of those elders condeming or calling on Boko Haram to stop murdering innocent people. Perhaps all the elders are resposible for creating the state of emergency in their region by equiping and financing killers, robbers, and distabilizers like Boko haram.  Deal with it.

The north should empower their people by distributing wealth rather than hurding everything and blaming others.  That place is full of one Sariki who is insanely reach and hundreds of thousand of poor desparate people around him. He feeds them once a yaar and calls it Sadaka.

Who are this “SHITMAN-GONU”trying to fool?America after sept 11 changed their immigration laws, despite the fact that americans losted most of their so proclaimed freedom, but they accepted it,cos security first. If you want a powerful economy, you must give investors the security. We all knows that death is debt we must pay,but nobody wants to die through a surden bomb blast. He wants his 5 times a day pray, forgetting that many has died doing thesame without harming no one.If the army presence is a disturb to him, then what do he thinks that disturbs the families of the late disease?Let him bear the army around,is indeed far more bearable than losting a loved one.To hell with “shitman” and the elders facing the mecca to pray 5 times.Enough is enough!!!
