Members of Boko Haram attack Damaturu prison; free 40 inmates

Suspected members of the extremist group, Boko Haram on Sunday attacked the Damaturu satellite prison and freed forty of their members detained at the prison.

According to a prison officer, the attackers throw two explosives and open fire at the guards on duty, forcing their way into the prison.

The Yobe State Commissioner of police, Patrick Egbuniwe who confirmed the attack to Channels Television’s  Correspondent in Yobe said forty prisoners were freed during the attack.

Mr Egbuniwe said the combine efforts of the police officers and prison wardens engaged the gunmen in exchange of gunfire, killing one inmate while a warden sustained injuries in the process.

As at the time of this report Mr Egbuniwe said a combine team of the Police and Army are after the attackers who he said have fled to Bundigari and Pawari wards of Damaturu, the state capital.

The latest attack is the second on a prison facility in the state with the first at Damagum, Fune Local Government in March this year where 14 inmates were freed by members of the sect.

Boko Haram’s insurgency has killed hundreds, mainly in the Northern part of Nigeria.

On Friday, President Goodluck Jonathan sacked both the National Security Adviser and the Minister of Defence in a bid to strengthen the nation’s security system amid fire of increasing terrorism in the country.

My anger is reserved for the imponent Nigerian security operatives and their heads in this country for not anticipating such attacks and forestalling it… I cannot help but wonder why they keep being screwed on daily basis by BH even when a non security person like me know that, they are likely to attack again today! I just wish BH will come in the open to air their views and stand like men to defend their rights than to be hiding behind suicide bombings to score popularity contest! They are merely bombing their turf…

i think the security operatives of the said prison should be duly interrogated, cos i see no reason why those animals should be left in that prison without a quick transfer out of the town for security reasons.boko haram are not faceless, the nigerian govt has just been faceless to the truth of combating their crimes.its not enough sacking the NSA and his counterpart, its for the govt to monitor the acts and activities of their core officials including the FEC members.there’s no meaningful attack on a home without a cooperation of an insider.president jonathan should look inward and not outward for solution.

I can’t laugh. Is it not the same Damaturu that have been under curfew for the better part of last week..or do we now have two Damaturu in Nigeria. There is no security in Nigeria, pathetic. As someone once asked, “if boko haram says no movement on a certain day and federal govt. says we should not worry and move about freely, who should we heed”? Your answer is as good as mine!!!

Honestly, it is annoying when i heard that security have been beefed up in all the state of Damaturu and Kadunna. If such incident can happened where security is beefed up, tell me where is safe now. What type of security operative do we have in this country called Nigeria. Please Federal Government should stops deceiving people by telling us to go about and do their lawful business when there is no security. Enough is Enough, it is time for us to call a spade a spade and not a digging fork ok.

What is so upsetting to me is the way these northern governors and leaders keep on describing the Boko Haram malaise.
All they keep on saying is…”It is unfortunate”… Well, when their own family members are also killed, let them still do nothing and open their mouth and say…”It is unfortunate”.

Why do we have to keep such a large number of animals in a single prison?I have said it several times and will continue to say this if you arrest ten, kill 7 and leave 3 for investigation! why do we have to keep them knowing fully well that our legal system is porous.
