The Seme Border Command of Nigeria Customs Service and the Badagry Division of the Nigeria Police on Wednesday said they have put in place measures to check rampant attacks from smugglers.

The two federal agencies disclosed that the measures were necessary, following the two days of gun battle with smugglers at Gbaji-Yeke customs check point.

The DPO in Badagry Police Division, Mr. Dankoli Mohammed, and the Seme Border Customs spokesman, Ernest Olottah alleged that smugglers attacked the checkpoint on June 25 and June 26.

They said the smugglers attempted to shoot their way through the checkpoint along Seme-Badagry-Lagos Expressway, but they were resisted by men of the customs and the police.

Mohammed said it took the efforts of a joint security task force, including soldiers from the 242 Battalion, Ibereko, Badagry to repel the attacks.

Olottah said the smugglers might have attempted to go through Idiroko route in Ogun State to Lagos, but found the security there difficult to beat.

He said the situation was now under control and there was no casualty on the side of the task force.

Efforts to get the Area Comptroller of Customs in Seme, Alhaji Sadiq Sahabi, for his comments were not successful.
