The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has advised Nigerians to ensure the destruction of all empty and used cans of drinks as part of efforts to stop the use of cans in making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Speaking at a news conference on national public enlightenment campaign on security tagged, ‘Drink the content, Destroy the can’, the agency’s director of administration, David Dogo said the campaign has become necessary due to the increasing cases of improvised explosive devices being made from empty cans of drinks.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Deputy Director, Public Relations of the State Security Service (SSS), Marilyn Ogar added that vegetable oil cans, hard plastic containers and used oil filters should also be destroyed after use.

She added that these are some of the containers used by terrorists to manufacture the IEDs.

She further enjoined all Nigerians to be security conscious, noting that “securing the nation is a collective responsibility of all Nigerians and all persons resident in the country.”

The country has witnessed increased bombings by some insurgent groups that use IEDs made from some of the materials the campaign is geared to address.

Recent raids on hideout of the sect in some states revealed that the used cans were part of the materials used in making the bombs.
