Oteh can attend some meetings despite her suspension-Okonjo Iweala

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has defended the attendance of former Director-General (DG) of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Ms Arunma Oteh, at Tuesday’s meeting of the Economic Management Team.

Briefing state house correspondents after the meeting Dr Iweala said that Ms Arunma’s suspension from office does not stop her from attending or participating in one or two meetings on the economy.

According to the Coordinating Minister of the economy, the suspended DG is yet to be indicted by the investigations and therefore can continue to contribute her ideas to meetings.

A mild drama ensued at the Presidential villa when the suspended DG attended the Economic Management Meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Ms Oteh was a member of the Economic Management Team by virtue of her former position as the DG SEC.

However, with her suspension, it is expected that she would cease to be a member and give way to the acting DG, Ibrahim Bello, to take over her membership.

Why do our leaders think the rest of us are stupid? Would Okonjo-Iweala want us to believe that if she succeeded in her bid to become the World Bank President, if any of her officials were to be sent on suspension from office for whatever reason, she would allow such an official to attend the Bank’s meetings while serving the punishment? This is nothing but a confirmation of the culture of impunity and I don’t give a damn mentality that has kept the country at where we are today.
No matter how intelligent Oteh might be, there is no justification on earth for her to have been allowed to attend the Economic Management Team meeting while on suspension. Nobody is indispensable. It is brazen attitudes like this that tend to undermine whatever claims to commitment of the present administration to the fight against corruption. If we must be taken seriously by the outside world, there should be no sacred cows. Allow due process to be followed, and if she is exonerated, she can return to her office. To say there is nothing wrong shows that Okonjo-Iweala is also deficit in integrity and honour.

Before we start throwing stome we need to understand that there is what is called due process. We need to follow due process in all we do. She is on leave and noy yet sacked. According to the minister of finance, the report of the investigation is yet to be concluded and it will be out soon. She has not been indicted and so it does not stop her from attending meetings. Dr. Iweala has no blame here. She is following the rule of law!

pls forget Okonjo, little wonder the Americans put their feet down to make sure she never smelt the World Bank chair. The woman has integrity deficit in aboundance.

Did you listen to her on what she told House committee about NNPC’s JP Morgan account?

Why is Okonjo doing this to herslf and reputation?

  • Angryniger

What a load of bull, Okonjo – iweala is a bigger fool and idiot than one thought i am not prone to use abusive words online, but her reasoning is unbelievable, to state that Oteh could attend one of two meetings, so what happens to the acting Sec, can he/she attend, as well which would result in two persons attending as a right of membership being the SEC.  only in nigerian would they have such warped reasoning, THE TIME IS NOW, WE SHOULD ALL STAND UP AND DO AWAY THESE BUNCH OF THIEVES IN GOVERNMENT.  NIGERIAN SPRING IS ROUND THE CORNER

    • Donfreedom1

I am greatly disappointed by her statement. So the meeting is not pat of work? We have weak institutions and processes. Any decision taken that meeting cannot be challenges as illegal. So we have no single good leader in this country?

  • Dr. J. Hope

When you put these poor leaders who are not fit to rule their own family to run the affairs of Nigeria, what you have is massive chaos, killings by extremists, armed robbery by tugs, and politicians looting the local, state, and national treasuries. Enough is enough! How can individuals who cannot manage their own family be allowed to run Nigeria affairs?

A suspended person can attend some economic meetings! back to sender, that insult on us,FOOL.

    • Omoade Nimi

Count Okonjo Iweala out of any corruption mess. Her concern is on due process.

  • ogaokpia

Why blame Okonjo-Iweala, blame Goodluck Jonathan who must have asked her to allow Ms Oteh to attend the meeting.  Is this his soft spots for women? Ridiculous pretentious anti-corruption campaigners taking the rest of Nigerians for a ride. Later the President would say people are insulting him in the social media? How can Okonjo-Iweala explain her sudden volta-face harakiri to international observers?

    • Jude L/A USA

Why is madam world bank always curiously eager to speak for GEJ these days. Is she now mouthpeice Reuben Abati? Since she claims to be an international figure, what she  seems not to know is that, the international community are observing her.

  • FUNSHO,Germany.

Still wonder why this animals called Boko Haram can not  just force there way into the residence of this bastard we call leaders and bomb them all.Is it when this learders say the word fool before nigerians know tthat they are just seen as idiots and bunch of fools by the so called leaders?for Okonjo Iweala, may God distroy you and your family for calling Nigerians FOOL.

Madam Minister…….In what capacity is her attendance please? What would have happened if the acting DG showed up to attend the same meeting?
You can fool some people some times, but you can fool all the people all the time…..madam!

    • Omoade Nimi

She is on leave and not yet sacked!

  • Dan

This goes to show you the caliber of leaders we have. They are just dumb fools. Why should you let her attend the meeting after sending her on compulsory leave and appointing an acting DG. Is the position for Oteh or for DG SEC? This country, there is no hope, no leaders, only rulers. Jonathan is really incompetent

  • Mohammed Otaki Agbo

My dear dr is right..de poor DG has not been found wanting and unless otherwise she still remain de tsar of SEC.
