NUPENG begins strike today

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike over the failure of the federal government to pay subsidy for imported petroleum products and the poor state of the country’ refineries among other issues.

The group disclosed this at a media briefing addressed by its national president, Achese Igwe, in Lagos.

Meanwhile, the NUPENG president said the union will begin its planned strike today in sympathy with their members sacked on Wednesday by the MRS Oil and Gas Plc.

Mr Igwe said the strike will continue until the MRS management reinstates the sacked drivers.

He said: “Despite the promises and understanding reached between the union and the management of MRS, the company still went ahead to sack our members, about 2,500 tanker drivers.

“The action of the company is not acceptable to us as a union.”

He said the strike would be restricted to the Lagos zone, which includes Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, Oyo, Osun and Kwara States.

Other parts of the country depend on this area for supply of fuel; therefore, it would be more like a national strike.

Mr Achese said that other parts of the country might join the strike in sympathy and solidarity.

NUPENG YOU GUYS HAVE STARTED. WHY CANT YOU HELP THE GOVERNMENT AT ANY UGLY SITUATION YOU GO ON STRIKE. BE INFORMED THAT WE HAVE ONLY ONE NIGERIA AND EVERY TRADE UNION MUST WORK IN THE INTEREST OF ALL NIGERIANS. DO NOT PUNISH NIGERIANS WITH FUEL SCARCITY. IT IS NOT BY FIGHTING ALONE YOU CAN WIN A WAR

I still stand to be corrected, MRS Oil and Gas is a private company. Why would NUPENG paralyze the country in support of 2500 sacked drivers? The govt should within 24 hrs deregister NUPENG and the sacked drivers should be immediately replaced. Jonathan should not be distracted from fighting Boko Haram, that is, if he is.

If this alone is their grouse, then this Nupeng people are not serious!! It’s not like the govt. has said it won’t pay, but that it has to verify all claims and make sure Nigeria is not being fleeced by fraudsters. What’s needed here for both cases is a meeting btwn both parties to discuss the best way forward and not senseless strike!!

Some correction on my part, the govt. has to wake up and accelerate proper work on our ailing refineries. This is the main cause of all this oil subsidy brouhaha!

I think these so called NUPENG are also fraudsters. Why is it now that they want to get their money when some of their fraudulent colleagues are already under trial. Are they afraid that they too will be implicated during the trial hence the HURRY to collect their money. For me, the should hold on till until their claims are duly verify.

This NUPENG guys have started again. They just have to know that whenever this act or omission is done it is the poor masses that suffer. What concerns their strike with employer and employee relationship. He who hire can fire, did they want Federal Government to call Private/Public Company to order by false. There legal means of tackling this problem at National Industrial Court. We will start to perceive this labour union as enemy of poor people of this nation now. It is high time for the union to look for other alternatives in resolving problems or agitation rather than incessant strikes. Please.
