A one year-old girl was killed when a one-story ancient building collapsed, while others sustained varying degree of injuries in north western state of Kano.

The toddler, according to an eyewitness account was playing, with other kids on the balcony of the building, located on Niger Road, Sabon Gari, when it caved in.

Neighbors, who reside opposite the ill-fated building, said the debris from the collapsed building trapped the toddler, alongside her playmates and some others at the ground floor.

Good Samaritans in the neighborhood hurriedly mobilized and rescued the helpless toddler, alongside others trapped at the ground floor before the arrival of Fire fighters.

The toddler, identified as Firdausi Opeyemi was rescued by neighbors, but gave up the ghost on their way to the Aminu Kano Hospital.

Residents of the building are now taking refuge at the neighborhood while appealing to the state government to come to their.

Sources told Channels Television that the deceased toddler and her mother were formerly residents of the collapsed building but were on a visit to the house when it suddenly collapsed.

Other injured persons from the collapsed building are receiving treatment in hospitals within the vicinity.

The father of the late toddler is said to be an employee of a First Bank branch in Kano.
