The Non-indigenous Dwellers Association of Mpape, a satellite town in Abuja have appealed to the federal government to rescind its decision to demolish the settlement which has over 3 million inhabitants.

Addressing a news conference in Abuja, on Tuesday, the chairman of the association, Mr. Friday Chiemeka, accompanied by placard-carrying members of the association, said the proposed demolition will render over 3 million persons homeless.

He complained that the Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) has failed to provide alternative accommodation for them.

A widow who also spoke at the occasion said the proposed demolition has thrown up the issue of settlers and indigenes as she alleged that the demolition will not affect some houses said to belong to indigenous people of the area.

The FCTA had marked 10,288 houses for demolition for alleged violation of the Abuja master plan.

The Minister for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed on Monday, announced that plans have been intensified to demolish over 10,000 illegal structures in Mpape, a densely populated area in the nation’s capital.
