IBB backs calls for creation of state police

Former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida on Thursday described the insecurity in the country as a passing phase associated with any developing nation.

General Babangida who made the observation in an interview with Channels Television in Minna said the solution to the problem is dialogue and perseverance.

The former president also threw his weight behind the calls for the establishment of state police, saying that the fears being entertained in certain quarters for the creation of state police were unfounded.

“Left to me, the whole essence of governance is to provide adequate security for the people and in whatever way this is achieved, it is acceptable. I don’t think what happened in the 50s should continue to haunt us. We should try to move on.

“When we were there, we established the National Guards that was so vilified and was later dropped. Why should we think that what happened in the 50s when the regional police were used to intimidate members of the opposition political parties will continue to happen under the present dispensation.

“I don’t think the incumbent governors can use state police to intimidate anybody. Honestly, the fear is unfounded.”

General Babangida expressed optimism that the country will overcome the present security challenges rocking some parts of the country saying that the country had overcome similar crisis in the past and can still do it again.

While calling for support from the federal government in tackling the raising security problem, he appealed to Nigerians not to allow the present crisis to divide the country along ethnic line.

He also enjoined the Nigerian media practitioners to stop giving prominence to those suggesting the break-up of Nigeria and described the call on President Goodluck Jonathan to resign as laughable.

if you ask me this is one in recent time, an interview by IBB that seems to me reasonable and show case some level of honesty. IBB for the first time happen to be on the same page with Nigerians on a national issue. I just hope this would not be because election is around the corner again.

I must agree that trial & error is sometimes necessary in the course of a developing country. Rome wasn’t built in a day! Sometimes it has to get worse before it gets better; and better it WILL get….PEACE!

NOTHING GOOD COMES OUT FROM DARK ROOM. CONQUER ELECTRICITY PROBLEMS. WITH CONSTANT POWER WE ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS WILL HELP BUILD UP SECURITY DEVICES USIING SIMPLE ELECTRONICS. WE DO NOT NEED POLICE MEN CARRYING AK47 ALL OVER OUR STREET. LET US USE SIMPLE ELECTRONICS TO ALSO GIVE THE POLICE PEACE OF MIND. THEY CAN STAY AT THE COMFORT OF THEIR OFFICE (IF THERE IS ACTUALY COMFORT IN THE POLICE STATIONS) AND KEEP WATCH ON THE ENTIRE NATION. WHAT WE NEED IS CCTV CAMERAS AND OTHERS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND WORKING TELEPHONE NETWORK COMMUNICATION. NOT THE PRESENT EPILEPTIC ONE WE HAVE CURRENTLY. IT MUST BE IMPROVED ON TO BEAF UP SECURITY.

When IBB speaks, Nigeria and Nigerians should listen. The issue of security in Nigeria transcends party politics, ethnicity or religion. From boko haram to kidnapping, Jonathan has shown complete incapacity. Let us give security matters to state governors and regain our safety of lives and property and freedom of movement..

Many Nigerians may not understand why recently a group of retired but not tired Inspector Generals of Police meet with the President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to clearly make their position known and possibly remind all of us Nigerians of a seemingly forgotten past where our founding fathers could not freely carry out campaign outside their region without heavy security presence.

Indeed, the case we have followed from Delta State involving the State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Oduaghan clearly and spontaneously exposes the reason for a rethink by those clamoring for “STATE POLICE”.

Precisely, A certain Patriotic Elder Statesman and above all a Deltalite who upon completing his Ph D oversea, choosed to RETURN in other to give back to his country by leaving immediately two days after the end of that programe and  has served this nation in various capacity as a Lecture in U I, an adviser to the federal Government and a visiting lecturer and guest speaker home and abroad.

He purchased a piece of land from a multi-national company with all documents upto a Certificate of Occupancy C of O., strangely enough until the government of Dr Uduaghan there were no issue. Of course in his crave to acquire like his brother James Ibori, he began all sort of attempts to forcefully take over the land by proxy. The matter, was taken to court, eventually the court in Asaba, Delta state ordered Governor, Oduaghan & co to maintain status quo until determination of the case. Because they went on STRIKE.  He now used the Commissioner of Police Delta State in Person of Ikechukwu Aduba, to unlawfully without regards to the court order, letter of invitation or warrant of arrest to forcefully take this Elder-stateman in his 60′s to asaba, like a common criminal.

Therefore, the claim by the governors forum should not be seen as realistic, but anti development. If they claim they do not have control over the Police commissioners in their states, in the case of Delta State, was it the President or IG who ordered the CP Delta State for such an illegal operation or the Governor. Your guess is as good as mine.

    Conclussion:

What they the governors are asking for is a direct license to chase out of their various states any “perceived opposing voice” hence, the reason why despite all efforts by federal government to move Nigeria forward, things remain as if nothing is being done because the component units have not embraced such reality.

Again, we recommend that the judiciary be strengthened and made financially independent, So when the governor realizes he will not be depended upon by the judiciary he will not manipulate them.

Lastly, except we do not want the unity of this nation “Nigeria” then we should go ahead with the call.
