A legal practitioner, Emmanuel Anyaegbunam on Tuesday said that the constitution that empowered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register political parties also gives the commission power to deregister such associations that failed to meet its requirements.

Mr Anyaegbunam, who was speaking against the background of deregistration of 28 political parties by INEC, said: “Yes, INEC is the constituted authority in this country for registration of political parties and as such, having that constitutional power, and if we go through the elementary basic of public law, we have what we call implied powers in Balewa and Doherty, every person who has a power or a right, he has also implied power, so if you have a power to register, it is also implied that you have the power to deregister.
