A pilot, Captain Benson Ikponmwosa, today said the Airport in the Federal Capital Territory is one of the most breached airports amongst many others in the country.

Ikponmwosa said “Abuja airport is one of the most breached airports in this country in terms of people incursing on the air-side; You are coming on approach and you will see somebody, a man, a woman in the bush path….You Know, just walking, just going about their own businesses”.

He lamented the dangers presented by the state of the airport saying “Now this is in day light you see them, if they are able to do this in day light, now tell me how a perpetrator cannot do something dastardly at night”.

The grey haired pilot, who was speaking on Channels Television’s morning flagship programme, Sunrise Daily, compared the lighting system of other airports where he has flown around the world and the ones obtainable in Nigeria. He blamed those in authority for telling the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah and President Goodluck Jonathan “lies”.

He also debunked the claim by Group Captain Obakpolor that “no one should bother about lighting areas that aircrafts do not land at night in the airport”. He said “Why won’t anybody be bothered about the lighting system of an airport of international standard?”

“But airplanes maneuver (Taxi) there at night, last they did, the night before they did….. Why would anybody taxi in darkness?” he asked.

He questioned the experience of the pilot and co-pilot of the helicopter that crashed with the former National Security Adviser, Andrew Azazi and former Kaduna State governor, Patrick Yakowa aboard. The duo, according to Ikponmwosa, had less than 1,200 flying hours combined.

The visibly angry pilot concluded by saying that if he were to be a governor ” There is nobody with 800 hours (flying experience) that is going to be the captain of an airplane that i am flying in”

“There are captains of helicopters in this industry, they have more than 10,000 hours flying helicopters, look flying is not a joke” he posited.
