Renowned Nigerian novelist, Prof Chinua Achebe, has passed away at the age of 82.

Professor Achebe died last night in a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, United States.

An unnamed family source said the Professor had been ill for a while and was hospitalised in an undisclosed hospital in Boston.

Some of Professor Achebe’s popular books include Things Fall Apart, No Longer At Ease, Arrow of God, A Man of the people and Anthills of The Savannah.

Born on the 16th of November 1930, Prof Achebe is best known for his first novel Things Fall Apart, published in 1958 and regarded as the most widely read book in modern African literature.

The book has been translated into 50 languages.

Things Fall Apart was recently named one of the 50 Most Influential Books of the last 50 years.

His last book, a memoir titled ‘There Was A Country‘ which focused on the Nigerian civil war, went on sale last year.

Until his death, Prof Achebe was a David and Marianna Fisher University Professor and Professor of Africana studies at Brown University.

He is survived by his wife, four children and grandchildren.
