Rivers Crisis: Commissioner Says Amaechi Still In Control

Following lingering activities in the polity and the current sore relationship between the state, the federal government and the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), the River State government has maintained that there is no chaos in the state.

Briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt, the state capital, the Commissioner for Information, Ibim Semenitari said the government of Chibuike Amaechi is still in full control of the state.

The removal of Timothy Nsirim as chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Area and subsequent replacement with Chikaodi Dike had sparked reactions within and outside Rivers state including a protest at the state’s house of assembly.

The caretaker Committee Chairman, Mr Dike and his team had also been prevented from entering the council building by men of the Nigerian police; a move the council boss said will not deter them from working.

In the middle of all of these, the state government has responded to reports making the rounds on the purported impeachment of Governor Amaechi insisting that these were mere rumours.

Amaechi is a duly elected governor of Rivers State and his tenure is not over yet. So why must he not be in control. Unless he has committed a breach, a serious breach for that matter, Rivers State people will be foolish to instigate his removal. Politicians must not see impeachment as a way to settle score. When you frivolously impeach somebody and bring in another, that person will be hunted out in the same manner. You will lack the moral ground to complain. The name of the game become ” frivolity and impunity”. Bill Clinton of US committed or was alleged to commit an act that caused embarrassment to America. But the people did not go out of their way to remove him because the value of the work he was doing for the.

But if it is true that Amaechi revoked the C of O for two institutions that are already operational for whatever reason, it is bad. I don’t call that politic. It is bad and cruel. Can’t we think of other people that earn livelihood from such establishment? Even if you have personal difference with the initiator, once classified as a business venture, it become a place of public interest. People work and earn food there. In these times of unemployment, one cannot just wake up, carry a pen and close down a business premises without thinking twice. Even if the land is in dispute, there must be other way to solve the problem in the interest of the public whom at different level, both the governor and the hotel owners represent. The owners may be comfortable because he certainly have excess before investing. BUT WHY SHOULD THE WORKERS REMAIN HAPPY WITH YOU FOR SHUTTING THEM OUT OF WORK. They certainly will swear for and/or curse you.
