The Minister of Water Resources, Miss Sarah Ochekpe, has warned that the continuous drilling of borehole for water may affect underground water supply in the future; warning residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja to desist from the act.

Mrs Ochekpe, who said this during a news conference, added that anyone who wishes to dig a borehole needs an approval from the ministry.

However, residents have denied knowledge of the directive, stating that they need the minister to further enlighten them on the dangers associated with drilling for water.

Some residents who spoke to Channels Television said that the government is yet to provide adequate water facilities and called on the ministry to immediately resolve the shortage of portable water in the country.

While stating her determination to bring an end to the water crisis, Mrs Ochekpe said the incessant drilling of boreholes for water can no longer be the practice.

In Nigeria, about 69 million people still do not have safe and sustainable access to clean water, while 103 million lack access to adequate sanitation facilities.

As the growing demand for water intensifies, it is estimated that about 100,000 children die annually from diseases caused by unsafe water.
