The Senate committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission has suggested the introduction of electronic voting ahead of the 2015 elections

Speaking at presentation of the commission’s Strategic Programme of Action, the Deputy Chairman of the committee, Senator Alkali Jazere advocated a pilot electronic voting system in some parts of the country.

Senator Jazere said in the amendment of the Electoral Act, the law makers could allow some flexibility for the electoral body to issue guidelines for the use of electoral voting system as a case study.

But the INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega said even though the legal framework doesn’t permit electronic voting, the commission is introducing new technologies that would make the transition easier if needed.

Professor Jega, while unveiling the commission’s strategic programme of action from 2012 to 2016, said “the plan contains actions and steps that will be taken over the five year period with the objective of providing electoral operations, systems and infrastructure to support the delivery of free, fair and credible elections”.

The event afforded representatives of some political parties the opportunity to clarify some issues concerning the electoral process in the country. One of which is electronic voting.

The commission hopes that the five year strategic plan will reposition INEC for sustained conduct of credible elections in Nigeria.
