The Governor of Rivers state, Chibuike Amaechi, has approached the Rivers state High Court, praying for an order to restrain the Chief Judge of the state from constituting any panel to investigate him, except if the request is in compliance with sub-sections (2), (3) and (4) of section 188 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

Counsel to the governor, Mr Lateef Fagbemi, also prayed the court to set aside any attempt by less than 22 members out of the 32-member house to initiate impeachment proceedings against him.

He is also asking the court for a declaration that any proceedings of the Rivers State House of Assembly initiated by less than 11 members, which is one-third of its members is null and void.

Five lawmakers purportedly impeached the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe the state assembly.

Meanwhile counsel to the five lawmakers applied to be joined in the suit but that was opposed by the governor’s counsel.
