A muslim scholar, Fassy Yusuf has said that the Quran does not stipulate the age for a female to marry, adding that those in support of underage marriage should ‘learn to live in present times’.

This edition of law weekly looks at the controversy surrounding section 29 subsection 4b of the 1999 constitution.

Speaking on the topic, Mr Yusuf, a lawyer, media scholar and the chief patron of the Nigerian Association of Muslim law students of the Olabisi Onabanjo university chapter, Ago Iwoye in Ogun state.

As part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process, the senate on Tuesday the 16th of July voted on the recommendations presented to it by the constitution review committee led by Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

Of the 32 recommendations voted on, the proposed deletion of section 29(4b) is the one that has stirred so much controversy including various online petitions that’s said to have gathered over 50,000 signatories in different parts of Nigeria.
