18 year-old Umar Ahmed said he had to play dead at the rooftop of the Westgate Mall, after one of the gunmen hurled a grenade at him on sighting him.

Ahmed who was all geared up for the Safaricom 7s Rugby tournament and was just about to make his way there from the Westgate mall when the gunmen stormed the mall.

According to his narration, while nursing burns on his hands and chest were being nursed at the MP Shah Hospital, he said he was at Westgate mall rooftop at the parking, and all of a sudden he heard screams and gunshots all over and that forced him to duck but it was however too late, as one of the gunmen who had stormed the mall caught sight of him and hurled a grenade in his direction.

He said he got scared and tried to run down the stairs and that was when he saw someone running towards the top, and that forced to run back up and hid behind one of the cars.

After the grenade went off, his attacker sought to confirm that he was indeed dead, and he was forced to play dead and thankfully it paid off as his attacker turned back on seeing him lie still.

There were at least 80 people admitted to the MP Shah hospital according to the institution’s chairman Manoj Shah.

He said that 11 people were brought in dead, pointing out that the mortuary was also at full capacity.

He said that the hospital had recalled all their doctors and more volunteer doctors have also joined them.
