The Director General of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, Mister Peter Idabor has tagged the recent report by Amnesty International on oil spills in the Niger Delta region as significant and accurate to a great extent.

Mister Idabor told Channels Television that the issue of volume of spillage reported by oil companies in Nigeria, without any special reference to Shell Petroleum has always been questionable but he however disputed claims by the international watchdog that reports on causes of spillage is manipulated by the oil companies.

He said that investigation into every reported spill is carried out through a Joint Investigation Visit – JIV, comprising of key players in the sector which ensures that details are not manipulated.

He explained that a JIV form is usually raised and presented to the National Assembly for every investigation and any manipulation can only occur in the document of the oil company involved.

Lamenting that no single compensation of communities has been recorded in many years, Mister Idabor stressed the need to quicken the amendment process of the NOSDRA Act to ensure oil companies are compelled to take full responsibility for all issues arising from a spill.
