Police-Beats-Up-GirlThe main victim of an assault perpetrated by a Nigerian mobile policeman has identified the officer as Corporal Nasir Mohammed and is pushing for justice.

A video of the incident published on Youtube showed an infuriated Corporal Mohammed beating Funmilayo Adebayo in muddy water.

Miss Adebayo says the incident occurred on December 18, 2013 at Lafiaji area of Lagos Island.

She claims she was in the process of buying cooked rice from a food vendor when the policeman came along and demanded that the food vendor sells fried fish to him. When she interrupted by asking the food vendor to attend to her first, the policeman pounced on her and beat her to a pulp inside muddy water.

“The man was hitting me on my chest and I am still having pains there,” she said.

Mr Mohammed said to be attached to Mopol 20, is suspected to be one of the security detail at a Union Bank branch in Lafiaji. There are claims that Mr Mohammed, with force number 229057, was drunk on the said day.

Channels Television’s correspondent, Lauretta Chiogor, said she was told by the police that the suspect, Mohammed, had been fished out and was in detention.

The video of the incident has gone viral on Youtube, showing an infuriated policeman hitting the 22 years old girl in muddy water and shooting several bullets in the air after the girl managed to break loose from him.

No one, not even Segun said to be the victim’s brother named in this video could go close to the already charged policeman suspected drunk with a gun in his hand.

The victim with her mother, brother and younger sister want justice.

Human rights activist, Joe Odumakin, is set to push for quick justice for Miss Adebayo. She condemned the act and stressed that “the general public need to have better confidence in the police. Somebody that is in uniform showing such naked display of power… there should be some level of decorum when the police is handling Nigerians”.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, confirmed that the suspect had been arrested pending further investigations into the incident.

A rights group, Amnesty International, had accused the Nigeria Police Force of human rights abuse. The police denied the claims.
