Islam On EducationThe Host of Be Blessed, Amina Adams, believes that terror group, Boko Haram, despite their Islamic bias are not reading from the Quran but only twisting the teachings of the holy book to justify their acts.

Appearing on Channels Television Youth programme, Rubbin’ Minds on Sunday, to discuss Islam’s stand on Education, she expressed displeasure at the manner in which the religion had been given a bad image because of the activities of the group.

The chattered accountant, in response to the sect’s view on western education, stated that a lot of people just pick lines from the Quran and make use of them in the context of their own selfish interest to justify their activities. It is, however, unfortunate that many people do not seek knowledge on their own and therefore are not aware that the extremists are not quoting from the Quran.

“Every Muslim is enjoined to seek knowledge. Go as far and as wide as you can to seek knowledge, that’s what the Quran tells us. So from there I have no idea where this people read from. I can certainly put my hand on my chest and say they are not reading from my Quran.”

A young Islamic scholar, Abubakar Sadiq, also on the programme, noted that most of the most knowledgeable scholars in the Quran were the women; a fact which he said showed that Islam does not frown at women – or men – getting education. According to him also, the Quran particularly emphasized that people should seek knowledge as far as wide as they can.

While eulogizing the benefits of western education, he said that Islam frowns at the activities of the terrorist group, Boko Haram, which has led to thousands of killings including those of women and children and the abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State.

“The stance that they have is not from Islam and it has nothing to do with Islam”, he insisted.

He likened the activities of the sect to that which has taken a dangerous turn, considering how they have attacked all categories of Nigerians including people in the mosques and churches. He noted that their ideologies were dangerous and Muslims should be wary of their teachings.

Miss Adams also wondered why the Boko Haram sect uses western technology to perpetrate evil. Their use of video cameras and YouTube to release videos which are products of western technology showed that there was a place for technological sophistication in Islam.

She urged people especially the media to seek knowledge in order not to be misled by the twisted views of the sect, revealing that many of the technological inventions that the world depends on were created by Muslims, including mathematics having its origin from Islam. She berated the media for doing selective coverage which leaves out the positive, developmental and peace finding values of Islam from limelight.

She regretted the damage that the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction would have done to the chances of having more girls in schools in Northern Nigeria where the idea of educating the girl child was just beginning to gain grounds.

Speaking further about the issues of the girl child and concept of marriage in Islam, Adams said that according to the Quran, “there is no marriage without the consent of the woman”; a stance which indicated that the conflict of ideas in Islam had been a problem of varying interpretations of the Quran.

Sadiq explained that man would always have desires and this has been the reason why there are different interpretations of the Quran, as people twist the holy book to justify their desires.

Abubakar Sadiq, who is the President of 1 Ummah, offered a scholarly explanation of the Quran’s recommendations concerning marriage. He aligned with Adams on her view, insisting that the religion does not support forced marriage and also does not support inducing parents with money in order to forcefully have their daughters.

Both guests expressed positive views on the safety and release of the abducted schoolgirls. They urged Nigerians to keep up the pressure and prayers for their release and with the cooperation of all Nigerians and the international support the Government has been getting, the girls would soon be back home.

They urged the media to be more balanced in their coverage of issues affecting Islam because the overwhelming spread of the negative idea about Islam was exposing conscious Muslims like them to stigma from the society.

Sadiq particularly advised that the media should give more coverage to the positive things being done by Muslims as this would also help promote the ideal and reduce the impact of negative teachings by the extremists.
