House-of-Reps1The House of Representatives in Nigeria has directed the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to speedily reactivate and replace all non-functional CCTV cameras at the airports across the country to check extortion of travellers and pilfering of luggage of passengers.

At Wednesday’s plenary, a lawmaker, Hassan Saleh, told the House that the proliferation of security operatives at the country’s airports had increased incidences of indiscriminate extortion, harassment and other vices.

The issue was deliberated on by the lawmakers as a matter of urgent national importance, in an attempt to proffer solution to the increasing trend of extortion at the airports.

Mr Saleh said such unpleasant experiences encountered by both outgoing and incoming travellers portray Nigeria negatively.

After considering the issue the House gave its committees on Aviation and Internal Affairs one month to investigate the ills and ensure the aviation authority arrests the situation.
