NHRCThe National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reaffirmed its resolve to carry out its protective mandate on people who are in conflict with the law in all detention facilities in the North central zone of the country.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Bem Angwe, who visited gazette and ungazetted detention facilities in the zone, said that the commission was auditing detention facilities to ascertain their level of compliance with the guidelines and standards meant for the treatment of detainees.

He advised ungazetted institutions to hand over suspects in their custody to the Nigerian Police for further investigation and prosecution in order to ensure that their rights are protected while exposing them to open and transparent trial.

Professor Angwe informed various institutions who have detainees in their custody to always ensure that inmates are treated decently, saying that the essence of the audit exercise was to inspect and make recommendations to appropriate authorities to enable them take action.
