JEGA 2 Public enlightenment officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have been tasked to ensure that Nigerians are equipped with adequate information about the electoral process, as an incentive for many to exercise their  franchise and be actively involved in the process.

The  Chairman of the commission, Professor Attahiru Jega, made the call when the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr James Entwistle, visited him in Abuja on Monday.

We are not promising a perfect election in 2015 but we are confident that we will do our best,” he told Entwistle.

Professor Jega explained that the commission had taken some steps to achieve a credible, free and fair election in 2015.

“We have, for instance, orgnised staff training in collaboration with development partners, strategic plans and reorganised staff and we are also planning a retreat to finalise the timetable for 2015.

The US envoy Entwistle told INEC officials at the meeting that the electoral process is a journey that never ends and continuous efforts must be made to better the process.

He identified some of the challenges that the electoral body must yet surmount ahead of the 2015 elections to include, making adequate arrangements for the increasing population of internally displaced persons to vote and the need to ensure that Nigerians get necessary information about the process, which he said was key.
