custom officersPandemonium broke out on Tuesday around Sawmill Area of Ilorin, as men of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) allegedly shot and killed an innocent person while trying to arrest the driver of a vehicle conveying contraband goods.

Confirming the death, the Police Public Relation Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, noted that the Police have been dispatched to maintain law and order, adding that it was while trying to force the vehicle to stop that the Customs men fired bullets that eventually killed one person.

A shop owner who was an eyewitness described the incident as commando styled by the men of the Customs who came in 2 buses pursuing a Toyota commercial bus coming from Lagos but which was stopped on the Eyenkorin axis.

He noted that the officers vandalized the bus when they caught up with it at the Sawmill area and engaged in sporadic shooting which later hit one person.

Another eyewitness noted that it was the process of trying to tow the vehicle by the Customs, which the people resisted, that led to the shooting of the person who was trying to ensure the safety of the injured driver.

On inspection, the 18-seater Toyota bus, with registration number KWARA SHA 136 XA, was carrying different brands of body cream, lotion and toothpaste.

The dead victim, who lived in the area, was said to have bought a new Sienna bus three weeks ago and brought out the bus for washing when the unfortunate incident occurred.

It was also reported that angry youths had set up bonfires preventing motorists from plying the ever busy Sawmill-Geri-Alimi Road in protest of the killing.

Though no arrest has been made, the Police PRO gave assurance that the situation was under control.
