unfpaThe Executive Director of the United ‎Nations Population Fund, Professor Babatunde Oshotimehin has called for an increase in the budgetary allocation to the education and health sectors.

Professor Oshotimehin who spoke at a meeting in Abuja said special focus on the sectors will assist in helping Nigeria to achieve its goal of socio economic transformation.

Representatives of the United Nations in Nigeria and government officials at a meeting, deliberated on how to utilize the nation’s demographic dividend in improving  socio – economic development.

One way to achieve this feat according to participants is increased investment in education and health care services.
‎They agreed that no amount of budgetary allocation is too much for the sectors.

With an estimated population of 177 million, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the 7th in the world. Government officials promise not to rest on their oars in making its vast human capital contribute to its developmental process.

While meeting the needs of the present and future generations of Nigerians requires efficient utilization and distribution of resources, the consensus here is that policy implementation by government and it’s institutions remains a vital ingredient.
