vlcsnap-2014-08-27-12h12m02s152While the police are still trying to unravel the mysterious death of the late Justice’s son, Alechenu Anyebe, a legal practitioner, Malachy Ugwumadu, says the entire security of the country is cumbersome, pointing out that the “suspects paraded are innocent”.

The veterinary,  Dr Alechenu Anyebe, on July 14, 2014, was gruesomely murdered by unknown persons. According to reports, the late Anyebe was said to have been shot dead somewhere in town and his body found dumped in a gutter at an area called owner occupier, while his 306 Peugeot car which was snatched by the unidentified gunmen, was later found in Wurukum area of the state.

On August 6, the police arrested one Torkuma Mbanongun at Wurukum Motor Park, Makurdi, with one AK47 rifle and two locally made pistols while other members of the gang took to their heels. Police later arrested some other members of the gang, including Sunday Chiangi alias Sunday Kpoki and UsmanYakubu all of Makurdi as suspects in the murder of Anebe.

Ogwumadu said: “It is easier to defend a criminal matter than to prosecute a criminal matter. The reason being that; by the standard of criminal prosecution under our legal regime, it has to be beyond every reasonable doubt. So if am going to cast any shadow of doubt, in the line of their own theory of the murder of Anyebe, it would be resolved in favour of the accused persons”.

Speaking on Channels Television’s programme, on Wednesday, Ugwumadu said people paraded as suspects were tortured to the point that the person tend to admit to a crime that he never committed.

“When you torture person to a point where he can no longer take it, he makes a confession and that confession is duly extracted from him,” he stressed.

In view of this scenario, Ugwumadu, emphasised: “If you are unable to assemble the body of evidence or relevant materialism and evidence in support of the charged that is referred against the accused persons, you have mainly wasted your time because you have clearly played into the hands of the defence to cast probably doubt and shadow.

Ugwumadu”stressed that the constitution, presumes a person innocent until proven by the law that the persons is guilty. He also lamented over the wanton killing and extra judicial killing in Nigeria and the manner such cases were being treated.

In the competence of the police to investigate criminal activities, Mr Ugwumadu emphasied that demands made by the government, make police not to do proper investigation thus, causing innocent people to be arrested.

According to the legal practitioner also lamented that Nigeria had become a country with ‘huge theatre of absurdity of crime and criminality thus, causing Nigeria to “gabble for Comedy”.
