court-hammer-gavel1An election tribunal in Osun State has held its first sitting to hear a case filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the outcome of the Osun State governorship election held on August 9 and won by the incumbent governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola.

Election observers said the election was free and fair, but the battle is not quite over as the two major parties in the race are now back in the court room.

At the tribunal led by Justice Maiketa Bako, the APC counsel Mr Kunle Adegoke, at the sitting, asked the court for the permission to inspect and conduct a forensic examination on electoral materials.

The counsel to the PDP, Mr Afolabi Fashanu, is also seeking a similar permission.

The chairman of the tribunal, however, granted the prayers of both parties but gave the PDP three days to file it’s petition challenging the outcome of the August 9 governorship election.

The aftermath of Nigeria’s election is usually characterised by election tribunal that often times takes long before the court gives its judgement on the issue, a situation that the electoral commission had stressed should be addressed for Nigeria’s democracy to continue to develop.
