A popular Nigerian R&B artiste, Banky W, has dismissed rumours that Star Boy, Wizkid’s song, “The Matter” was sung with him in mind as a result of issues they had during an agreement renegotiation.
He insisted that Wizkid was his boy and that he wished all artistes under his Label would be as successful as Wizkid.
“I think that people tend to make things a little more negative than they are.
“Every label executive prays for their artistes to grow to the point when they want to set up their own label and they have the ability to do so. It is a natural progression in music.
“I signed Wiz and he blow up and now he is doing ‘Star Boy’ (music label) and that is a good thing. That is not a bad thing.
“The interesting thing is to allow an artist to renegotiate. Wizkid has earned the right to sit at the table to do what he wants to do and I hope all my artistes are as successful as Wizkid,” he said on Channels Television’s programme, Rubbin Minds, on sunday.
The King of Lagos Party, as he calls himself, explained that as much as there were issues renegotiating the terms for Wizkid to have a label, the song, “The Matter” by Wizkid was not referring to him.
In the last few years, Banky W had tried his hands on rap music and to many Nigerians, it was a deviation from the usual R&B he was known for.
Banky, however, explained that he did not shift as many have said, but that he had always done rap songs.
“I don’t think I have made a shift but I think people who have paid attention to my albums know that I have always put out very versatile albums.
“People think that I just started rapping. I have rapped in every single album I have ever released.
“When I was making albums in my drum room in New York, I rapped on songs but I think, may be, the thing is, people pay more attention to singles. They do not buy the album to listen to the entire songs. Only your true fans go out to get the albums and it is only then you can get to listen to the rap.
“I have been trying to experiment and I have been doing rap. But I am still the R&B person,” he said
The artiste whose song, “Ebute Metta” brought him popularity, said he would be taking a course in New York on filmmaking and directing. The two and half months class, he said, would enable him embrace his passion that he had always wanted to pursue.
“I want the knowledge first and foremost, channel it into music, advertising and TV commercial. I might go into movie. The key thing is to stay relevant. I will do a city tour while I am in America.
The artiste who played a role in Jacob’s Cross also did not rule out acting in movie after his training in the the United States.
