Oyegun_Okorocha_Atiku2The All Progressives Congress (APC) held its 3rd Progressive Governance Series on Monday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, with talks focusing on  Nigeria’s health sector and the need to improve healthcare delivery across the nation currently tackling the spread of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.

The event, with the theme, ‘Dealing with the Challenge of Building a Physical Healthy Nation through Preventive, Protective and Innovative Medicare’, was held to seek ways of tackling the challenges  facing the nation’s health sector which has not seen adequate infrastructural development in decades.

At the event, a former Vice President, Mr Atiku Abubakar,  said that the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria had drawn attention to the need for adequate investment in health care infrastructure and service delivery across the country.

He also listed other challenges facing the country to include, inadequate security, high rate of unemployment and a dwindling standard of Education.

”We must identify the illness that affects our people most, what causes them and how they can be prevented,” he said.

The Oyo State Governor, Mr Abiola Ajimobi, also noted that “the APC celebrates intellectualism, performance and achievers instead of others who promote propaganda, insisting that the party had people of integrity that could change the fortune of the nation.

He said that some sectors of the Nigerian economy had become a source of concern to the party, as they had continued to dwindle despite efforts being made in some states.

However, Governor Ajimobi stated that the challenges at the moment were on how to eradicate such anomalies and examine the health sectors and other environment genetic ailment in Nigeria.

Speakers at the event stressed the need for those in governance to make conscious efforts to invest in the infrastructural development in the nation in order to sustain growth.

Professor Joy Okoye told the leaders to lay more emphasis on the need to address the poor maintenance culture of Nigerians and implement policies that would enable the health sector grow.
