Rauf Aregbesola. The Osun State government has held a flag-off ceremony for a new Government Reserved Area (GRA) for settlement ‎christened Oranmiyan New Town.

The project is part of the State’s Urban Renewal Project, aimed at addressing housing issues.

At the Flag-off ceremony held on Thursday in Osogbo, the state capital and where the New town is located, Governor Rauf Aregbesola said the increasing demand for housing expansion without inconveniencing the already laid out town plan gave birth to the new settlement expected to cater for over 80,000 people.

The Oranmiyan New Town is located in the state capital territory, within the precinct of the state secretariat and the Osun grove on over 1,200 hectares of land.

The New town, which was used as a farm settlement even after government acquisition in 1994, has seen successive governments trying to spring up the Government Reservation Area‎ settlement, but that never happened.

However, the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola has changed the history, with the flag-off of the housing scheme.

The Oranmiyan New Town is also expected to create job opportunities for artisans as work progresses on the site.

Addressing a gathering of persons looking to get allotments, Governor Aregbesola said that the government would remain committed to the project to fulfil the physical requirement of a new state capital and enhance empowerment of the people.

The New Oranmiyan Town comprises of Seven neighbourhoods that will house private estate development , community centres, commercial strips and recreational facilities. provisions will be made for good road networks, 24 hour security and police stations Iconic street scape beautification and landscaping among other infrastructures.

With the new settlement, the government is optimistic that Osogbo, the state capital, would be decongested with the increasing number of housing needs.
