Wole SoyinkaNobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has appealed to the Federal Ministry of Health to ensure the prompt release of 400million naira appropriated in the 2011 budget for the establishment of cancer centres in Nigeria.

Soyinka, while speaking at an interactive session with journalists in Abeokuta on the menace of cancer, equally urged Government to fast track the establishment of Cancer Control Centres across Nigeria in order to control the growing rate of the disease.

He revealed that he was diagnosed of cancer in 2013 but he has since been treated and had become free of the disease.

The octogenarian added that this experience prompted him to take up the challenge of embarking on massive campaign for early detection and treatment of cancer.

Prof. Wole Soyinka appealed to Nigerians to undergo cancer tests as he had done.

While admitting that the treatment of the disease is capital intensive, he noted that Nigeria was blessed enough to established cancer centres, which would make it easy for Nigerians to know their status.
