Three civilians have so far been confirmed dead in Monday morning attack believed to have been carried out by members of the Boko Haram terrorist group in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

In an interview with Channels Television, the Special Assistant to the Yobe State Governor, Mr Abdullah Bego, said the Nigerian military was able to repel the insurgents.

He said two of the civilians killed were medical doctors.

Mr Bego said that the military was still trying to get the figures of the insurgents killed in the fight.

Suspected members of the Boko Haram sect laid siege on Damaturu in the early hours of Monday causing residents to flee for safety.

Channels Television’s Yobe State correspondent, Jonathan Gopep, said sporadic gunshots were heard around 5:50am.

Residents of the town are said to be fleeing to supposedly safe areas as the identity of the insurgents and security agents is not clear to them.

Gopep also reported that military personnel deployed to the troubled town had been careful so as to avoid killing innocent fleeing residents.

In a telephone interview, Gopep, in Damaturu, said many residents were fleeing the town for safety, while others had hidden in different places.
