nemaThe National Emergency Management Agency [NEMA] has organized a workshop on the enforcement of law for safer cities thereby calling on professionals to adhere to laws guarding against cases of building collapses, environmental degradation, amongst others.

The Director General of NEMA, Muhammad Sanni  Sidi in his keynote address  blamed professionals for non implementation of building codes responsible for various vices as it affects building collapses in the country.

The seminar is organized by the Minna zonal office of National Emergency Management Agency to sensitize professional stakeholders on the need to fully implement building codes to guard against building collapse, building along coastal area and environmental degradation resulting from flood or illegal mining.

In his welcome address, the Special Assistant to the Kwara state governor on Emergency and Relief Services, Rahman Sefiu noted that the abuse and distortion of building or farming on waterways aggravate the impact of disasters.

He implored town planners to implement laws to ensure that people do not live in high risk areas or face threats such as flood while building codes should be adhered to.

The Director General of National Emergency Management Agency, Muhammed Sani Sidi said the world is witnessing a rapid impact of disasters caused by combinations of natural hazards and vulnerability, which constantly threatens people’s lives and source of livelihood.

The occurring cases of building collapse, building along or close to water courses and environmental degradation resulting from either flood or illegal mining should be addressed by professionals, he added.

Stakeholders were advised to ensure there is proper enforcement of laws for better cities.
