chukwumaThe Executive Director, Project Alert on Violence Against Women, Josephine Effah -Chukwma says one out of five Nigerian women experience one form of violence or the other which in most cases is due to ignorance. 

This she said this is according to the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) but globally it says one out of three women experience domestic violence either physical, emotional or sexual.

She added that there has been a lot of silence on domestic violence amongst women.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise, Mrs. Chukwuma said that the Nigerian woman is faced with violence in the home, office, cultural practices, “religious interpretations”that are used to abusing the rights of girls and women.

Human Rights Activists, Joe Okey-Odumakin also stated that violence against women is on the rise due to ignorance.

She stated that in her foundation she has had encounters with men that have gone through domestic violence but noted that the percentage of women is 98% higher than that of men.

“Violence against women sometimes is in the context of power” she added.
