Boko HaramSuspected Boko Haram militants are currently attacking security formations in Babbangida the headquarters of Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State north-east Nigeria, residents said.

Babbangida is 50 kilometres north of Damaturu the state capital and have encountered series of Boko Haram terrorists’ attacks in the past.

Residents said sporadic gunshots are currently being heard across the town as the rebellious group arrived the town by 6:30 Saturday evening and engaged security forces in a gun battle.

The source further confirmed that places currently under attack include; the military base located north of the town and the police station situated in the southern part, as well as the Local Government Secretariat, the Government’s Lodge and the boarding primary school of the area.

A security personnel who is currently serving in Babbangida town told Channels Television that report of a possible attack on the town by the militants was heard some days back but expressed dismay that no meaningful measures were taken to avert the purported attack.

He said that the attackers are currently engaging security forces at the military base and the divisional police station of the town as the police and soldiers in the town are making concerted efforts to repel the attack.

Saturday’s attack brings to four the major towns of Yobe State being attacked by the insurgents within a period of one month as Damaturu, Damagum, and Geidam were attacked in the month of December.

Saturday’s attack is, however, the first for the year 2015.
