Niger Republic, one of the countries involved in the collaboration efforts to fight Boko Haram in the north east region of Nigeria has withdrawn its support from the fight to reclaim Baga.

A statement by the Niger Foreign Ministry said that it would not be involved in any attempt to retake the key north-east town of Baga from the militant group.

The town is near the border with Chad and had housed a military base staffed partly by multinational forces.

The withdrawal of the troops from Niger Republic means Nigeria’s neighbour now has no forces directly involved in tackling Boko Haram.

Chad has also reportedly withdrawn its forces.

The foreign ministers of Nigeria, Chad Cameroon, Benin Republic and Niger Republic had met in Abuja late 2014 to agree on appropriate legal framework for cross border military operations against Boko Haram insurgency in the region.
