NLCThe Vice President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Issa Aremu, on Sunday alleged plans by some forces within and outside the union to manipulate the list of screened candidates seeking for positions as national officers of the union.

Addressing journalists in his office in Kaduna, Mr Aremu, who was standing unopposed as one of the three Deputy Presidents of NLC in the election based on the list of contestants already published by the union, said that any attempt to reopen the list of nomination would be illegal, unconstitutional and totally unacceptable by members.

He noted that Article 29 (2) and (3) of the NLC Constitution is very clear on the conditions that could warrant reopening of the list of contestants duly cleared by the Credentials Committee; such as death of a candidate before the election and withdrawal of a candidate by its affiliate union.

He called on the Abdulwahed Omar-led leadership of the union to keep to the spirit and content of a democratic NLC Constitution and avoid any action capable of creating crisis in the union before the delegates conference.

As NLC prepares for its 11th Delegates’ Conference taking place between February 9 and 11 in Abuja, major stakeholders that include majority of the 43 industrial unions affiliated to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have rightly observed that the success or failure of the forthcoming conference has great implications for Nigeria’s 2015 general elections.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was formed by Nigerian workers in 1978 and has successfully conducted 10 Delegates Conferences.

The Delegates’ Conference is significant to the Nigerian workers because it is an opportunity to not only elect new leaders, but also enables members to set agenda for the coming years and adopt motions and debates on critical issues that affect the workers.

According to the sharing formula, the public sector union having conceded the presidency to the private sector, had shared the remaining positions in the ratio of 9 to the public sector and 7 to the private sector.

As an association that has consistently asked for a free and transparent election and also good governance in the country, it is expected that the union and its leaders would obey its own rules in line with the saying; “He that seeks equity must come with clean hands.”
