Students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have shelved their planned protest in which they said they were going to shut down activities in the entire state today.

The President of the UNIBEN Student Union Government, Ifidon Ikhide, told Channels Television that this follows the intervention of the management of the school.

Meanwhile the Edo State Police Command mobilised hundreds of policemen to the gate of the university this morning.

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Folorunso Adebanjo, had told Channels Television that though the students have a right to protest, the police would not condone the break down of law and order.

Mr Adebanjo  had earlier on Tuesday said they were not worried about the students conducting a peaceful protest but thugs hijacking the event and unleashing mayhem on the people of the state.

“What we are concerned about is the violent one, because we will not allow any break down of law and order in the state,” he said via a telephone interview on Sunrise Daily.
