The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the Young Democratic Party (YDP) as a new political party.

The YDP had sued INEC over Its refusal to issue it a registration certificate.

Delivering judgment, Justice Ahmed Mohammed, held that the plaintiff had fulfilled political party registration requirements under Section 78 (4) of the 2010 Electoral Act, and granted all the reliefs sought.

He also held that, having met the requirements, INEC ought to have registered the political association within 30 days of its registration application, but it failed to do so without any cogent reason.

“He adds that the plaintiff’s suit succeeds and all the reliefs sought are granted.

This directive is coming less than three weeks to the 2015 general elections scheduled to take place on March 28 and April 11.
