SpeakerSome newly elected members of the House of Reps have been rallying support from their colleagues for the position of Speaker, ahead of their swearing in.

The latest is coming from the member-elect, representing Kazaure/Yankwashi Federal Constituency in Jigawa State, Muhammadu Kazaure, who says the Speaker of the House should emerge from the newly elected members.

According to him, the newly elected members in the House are in the majority and can therefore produce the Speaker irrespective of any in-house rules that members have followed over the years.

Since the conclusion of the presidential and National Assembly elections in March, the issue of who would emerge as the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives has been in focus.

Earlier in the week, prominent politicians from the South-East, led by Governor Rochas Okorocha, were among those who visited the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, to request for his support in the issues of zoning the leadership of the House of Representatives to the region.

Other party members from the North-Central have also said that they would wait for the new government to be sworn in before they make their demands.

It is the first time since 1999 that an opposition party is wining both the Presidency and a majority in the National Assembly.

How this success will be managed by the party and its elected members in the coming years has been a major topic of discussions among Nigerians.
