Fuel-scarcityNigerians have been reassured that the fuel scarcity witnessed across the nation would soon disappear following the payment of outstanding claims to petroleum marketers.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, gave the reassurance on Monday in Abuja, after a meeting with marketers that lasted over two hours.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala commended Nigerians for their patience during the period of the scarcity of the commodity.

She also asked the marketers to ensure steady supply of petroleum products to ease the sufferings of Nigerians.

Non-payment Of Subsidy Claims

For weeks, petrol stations across Nigeria witnessed long queues, triggered by non-payment of subsidy claims to oil marketers.

The situation continued even after the Federal Government announced that it had paid 156 billion Naira to the marketers as at last week.

The situation left many Nigerians to spend between five to six hours waiting to buy fuel. Man hours were lost.

While sale was ongoing at some fuel stations visited by Channels Television’s crew, some other fuel stations were not selling the product even after they have received supply.

The payment claims impasse that led to the short supply of fuel seem to have been resolved in the meeting between the government officials and petroleum marketers.

The persisting scarcity is beginning to take its toll on Africa’s largest economy.

Most Nigerian households and small business owners rely on fuel not just for vehicle operations but for powering of electricity generating sets that majority of the over 150 million population depend on. The nation generates below 6,000 megawatts of electricity rationed among the huge population.

They now look forward to adequate supply of the product to end the queues in petrol stations.
