imo election petition tribunal commence sittingThe Election Petition Tribunal in Plateau State has warned all parties involved in cases before the tribunal that it would not tolerate frivolous adjournments of cases.

At the inaugural sitting of the tribunal handling both National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly’s cases, the Justice said the warning was issued to ensure that there was no delay in the conclusion of trials.

The Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Lanre Akeredolu in his inaugural speech stressed that the tribunal members’ minds were firmly made up to ensure that justice was done “without fear or favour; affection or ill-will”.

However, Plateau citizens are also clamouring for justice, fairness and fear of God from the tribunal in the process of ensuring that the people’s mandate is adequately taken care of at the temple of justice.

Twenty-two petitions have been filed before the Plateau State governorship and legislative Election Petition Tribunal, by aggrieved political parties seeking redress for various offences committed during the just concluded general elections.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) complained of abnormality during the elections while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) complained of omission of party logo from ballot sheet.

There are two petitions for the Senate seats, five challenging House of Representative seats while 13 are contesting the elections into the State House of Assembly.

As the election petition tribunal commence trial of the cases at hand, it is expected that all parties would adhere strictly to the provisions of the constitution and the Electoral Acts and other relevant laws while members of the tribunal should ensure that justice is delivered .
