APC Policy DialogueThe discussions at a policy dialogue organised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the implementation of the political party’s agenda for change focused on how best to tackle corruption in Nigeria.

Experts at the second day of the event suggested the strengthening of the country’s criminal justice system, appointment of people of integrity to head the anti-graft agencies and whistle blowing as some of the measures to fight corruption.

Nigerians from all walks of life were present at the dialogue venue to set an agenda for the incoming administration on corruption.

The gathering discussed the cost of corruption to Nigeria, which they said had led to under-development, poor social infrastructure and weak systems, but also believed that change would come when Nigerians report those involved in questionable financial dealings to anti-graft agencies for prosecution.

The Co-founder of the Convention on Business Integrity, Soji Apampa, and the former Director, Financial Intelligence Unit, Juliet Ibeakaku, suggested on how to strengthen the existing criminal justice system.

This, according to them, should be backed by independence of the anti-graft agencies.

From their discussion, it appeared the first step the incoming administration of the APC would have to take is to tackle corruption, as over $12.8 billion dollars is the amount of annually capital flight from Nigeria to other parts of the world.

The consensus at the dialogue was that focus should be on prevention, detection and prosecution of corrupt persons, which they agreed were key to ending corruption.
