RiversThe Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has made good its word to conduct local government polls in 22 council areas in Rivers State, South-South Nigeria.

The electoral body presented the results to the media at its headquarters on Sunday, May 24.

After over eight hours of waiting at the conference room of the electoral body, officials of the commission, led by the Chairman of the Commission, Professor Augustine Ahiauzu, stepped out to present the final collated results.

Declaring the results in Port Harcourt, the state capital,  Professor Ahiauzu, said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) swept all the chairmanship seats in the election.

While the RSIEC Chairman informed the gathering that it was a successful outing, the Assistant Publicity Secretary of PDP in Rivers State, Samuel Nwonosike, said that the party still maintained its position on the conduct of the exercise.

The main opposition party in Rivers State, the PDP and 16 other political parties had stated their intention to boycott the polls if the commission went ahead to conduct the exercise, citing issues of illegality and lack of transparency in the process.

Meanwhile, hundreds of aggrieved civil servants and pensioners have blocked the gates of the Rivers State Secretariat to continue their protest against the non-payment of their wages.

Though the State Government is yet to speak on the matter, a protester, Tony Ochiagha, said that with few days to the handing over of government, their plight had become a matter of urgency.
