FifaFIFA President, Sepp Blatter is being investigated by US officials, as part of their inquiry into alleged corruption at the world football body, according to U.S. media.

The news came hours after the 79-year old Blatter announced that he was stepping down from his role as the President of FIFA.

US prosecutors launched a criminal inquiry last week, with seven FIFA officials arrested in Switzerland, part of a group of 14 people indicted.

The seven people arrested were: Jeffrey Webb, Eugenio Figueredo, Rafael Esquivel, Eduardo Li, Maria Marin, Julio Rocha and Costas Takkas.

Two days after the arrests, Blatter was re-elected president of FIFA.

On Tuesday, Blatter said that it appeared the mandate he had been given “does not seem to be supported by everybody in the world of football”.

He also said: “Fifa needs profound restructuring.” adding that he would remain in post until an extraordinary congress was called to elect a new President.

FIFA rules say the election is expected to take place between December 2015 and March 2016.
